Of CALL Evaluation and Hot Potatoes

1. What do you think evaluation of CALL courseware, websites, materiasl etc important?

It is part and parcel of life to evaluate, critics and comment things. We tend to seek for perfection though we know that nothing is perfect other than Him. The same goes to teaching and learning process. As an educator, we have to provide the students with proper knowlegde and latest information as well as latest technology. As we know, technology grows everyday. Thus, it is important to evaluate CALL courseware, websites and materials in fulfilling the students' hunger for learning. By doing this, we are able to determine whether the courseware/website/material is suitable or outdated for the students to use in their learning process.

2. How do you think Hot Potatoes JCloze may help your students learn English?

In the world where information is just a click away, I think it is very important to inculcate technology in learning. Hot Potatoes JCloze is one of the technology that can be utilized in helping the students to learn and get involve in learning English. It can also improve the teaching strategies and boost up the students' interest in doing English exercises. The students will get excite as they are able to get immediate feedbacks. With good colors combination, praising, clues and marks given, drilling activity will be interesting as they can explore the world of learning by themselves. The negative and positive reinforcement given will somehow motivates the students to acquire the knowlegde. Other than that, it is handy to both the students and the teacher. They are not required to bring textbook, exercise book etc. What they have to do is just got to the computer lab and start doing the exercises. Thus, the teachers will have to only facilitate the students as they are exploring the teaching and learning on their own. This can be one of the fundamental ways in producing future generations who are capable to learn not via the spoon feed processes only.

today I learnt about the introduction of CALL..and, alhamdulillah, my friend and i were not late coming to class or else we might not be able to learn..basically, we learnt quite a lot..we were also taught on how to prepare lesson by using technology.. the activities are beneficial for the students as well as the teachers. I think, the use of technology is one of good ways to promote learning is totally fun. wee~

at the end of the class, we were asked to apply the things that we have learnt by preparing a task sheet for the students. the task sheet should be done by using computer and the students could not do it with using paper and pen. that means, the task sheet should incorperate computer and can only be answer by using the computer as well.

so, this is the task sheet that I managed to prepare.

Salam and good morning.

And so it goes, the final semester has started. This is the first class for me, CALL. What is CALL? It is stands for Computer Assisted Language Learning, one of the interesting subject, hopefully, that i will be learning through out the semester. Well well well, i have not introduced myself yet. I am Mafarhanatul Akmal bt. Ahmad Kamal. As the name is quite long and difficult to remember, I prefer people acknowlegde me as Hanna Akmal.

I love to blog! I think it's becoming one of my passion. BUT, that does not indicate me as a computer savvy or an expert. It's just that I am a computer/internet literate as I know how to use it and a little of it here and there. But, I am sure that I am good in Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel and a litle on Publisher. :) In term of hardware, I do know what is CPU, speaker, motherboard etceteras. However, let me be frank, I own a laptop and if happened the laptop is not function, be it the software or the hardware, I rather send it to the expert as I do not have any ideas on how to repair it. ;P

Learning via computer and internet is very interesting. It is one of the factors that excite us to learn more and more by exploring it. I have been using computer to learn since I was a litle kid. Back then, I used to have lessons on language or math by using computer software. Not only at home, I was taught using computer at the school as well. However, during my practicum days, I was not able to incorporate the use of computer through out the lessons. The difficulty to use it in the lesson was my strong reason. The school is too big, and the students were like to skip classes by loitering around the school. It was like impossible to get them to move from one place to another by not missing any of them. And, as a trainee teacher, I was not encourage to use computer as the medium of teaching.

Based on my experience, I would love to incorporate the use of computer/ technology in teaching and learning process. It will be a lot of fun. The students will be more excited and eager to learn rather than by using chalk and talk. There a lot of courseware or application that can be used in teaching. At the same time it is able to improve the students' proficiency in computer skills as well as in language skills. The students are able to get to know the latest computer/technology invention as well as get connected around the world by using the language. It will be such 'killing two birds with one stone".

Thus, I hope this course will help me to improve my skills in computer/technology so that I can use it to teach the future generations. InsyaAllah. Till then, enjoy our final semester and see you around peeps!!
